An Optical Network Interface Unit for Hypercube-Based Mutichannel Ring Networks

چکیده

In this paper we present an optical hypercube-based multichannel network. The hypercube routing functions are implemented on a ring topology using wavelength division multiplexed channels on a single ber. For a network of size N, we show that only r = log 2 N distinct channels are required. This design can accomodate both static and dynamic routing using packet or circuit switching. In addition to designing the hypercube-based ring network, we also propose an all Optical Network Interface Unit (ONIU) capable of perfoming high speed packet switching using a static routing scheme. The ONIU is implemented using existing optical technology. It capitalizes on the inherent capabilities of optics to perform routing and switching functions by a parallel search of the routing tables. Furthermore, ONIU eliminates the electronic bottleneck by performing optical/electrical conversion only at the packet source and destination. Based on the SEED array technology, the ONIU switch can be reconngured in GHz range and provide high bandwidth necessary to perform distributed and parallel computing over a local area ring network.
